Alma

Each Senator represents a distinct region of Canada.  I am very proud to represent the Senatorial District of Alma in the region of Quebec.

The Quebec region has 24 senatorial districts. This is not the case with the other three senatorial regions (the Maritime provinces, the West, Ontario nor the Yukon and the Territories)  in which cases Senators' districts are the actual provinces or territory in which they reside.  The 24 senatorial districts in Quebec follow the boundaries of the 24 Electoral Districts of the Quebec Legislature exactly as they existed at the time of Confederation.  Each of Quebec's 24 senators are appointed to represent one of these districts, namely the one that was vacant at the time of his or her appointment.  In the Quebec region, Senators must actually own "real property" valued at at least $4000 in the specific district he or she represents.

The specific senatorial district in Quebec that I represent, namely Alma, should not be confused with the city of Alma located in northern Quebec.  Interestingly, Alma, the senatorial district, actually consists of a vast portion of the City of Montreal (to the east of St. Denis Street) and of the City of Laval to the north.  According to an excerpt of the Consolidated Statutes of 1859, Alma is described as:

"The Parishes of Long Point, Pointe-aux-Trembles, Riviere des Prairies, Sault aux Récollets, in the county of Hochelaga, and that part of the Parish of Montreal which lies to the East of the prolongation of St. Denis Street; the County of Laval, that part of the City of Montreal which lies to the East of Bonsécours and St. Denis Streets, and their prolongation."

Descriptions of all of Quebec's 24 senatorial districts are outlined in the 1859 Consolidated Statutes of Canada.

Quebec is often referred to as "la belle province" - the beautiful province - because of its majestic and diverse natural landscapes and also because of its unique Quebecois and francophone culture and demography. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. In particular, the City of Montreal, where Alma is located, is famed for its architecture, fine cuisine, shopping, and night life.  Also, it is the largest inland port in the world, being at the head of the famed St. Lawrence seaway which leads to the vast hinterlands of North America.

Please take a look at our photo album to see some of the beautiful scenery in and around the Senatorial district of Alma and Montreal.  The photographs have been kindly provided by the Tourism Bureau of Montreal.
