Redefining Directions: Changing the Name of The Northwest Territories

On February 3, 2004 I launched an initiative to change the name of the NWT.  I prepared an 8-page brochure on the issue and sent it to every household in the NWT as well as key decision makers in the North and in Ottawa.  You can view this brochure by clicking on the [Brochure] link below.

A number of people have written and spoken to me and I have made several presentations at schools and to other interested groups.  Read their views by clicking on the [Your Views] link below.  Or click the [Feedback] button to express your opinion.

Changing the name of the NWT is not something that can happen overnight.  Recently, our neighbouring territory to the West changed its official name from "The Yukon Territory" to simply "Yukon Territory."  Even this minor change took some time to achieve.  I plan to continue my campaign to convince people of the need to change our name to reflect our gradual constitutional evolution.  After all, if the NWT were ever to become a province, would we want to be known as the "Province of Northwest?"  Read about latest developments by clicking on [Latest News].
